Rotator Cuff Injuries

May 30th, 2009

Pain is the most common symptom of a tear of the rotator cuff. The pain is typically associated with overhead activity or reaching outward or backward. However, night pain is also common with rotator cuff tears and can prevent a good night’s sleep. Patients with a torn cuff will often find themselves sleeping in a recliner trying to find a comfortable position.

Another common symptom of a rotator cuff tear is weakness. Noticeable weakness to shoulder flexion or external rotation- moving the hand away from the body- becomes common as the tear gets larger or as atrophy sets into the rotator cuff muscles. As the tear propagates into a larger tear, the ability to raise the arm overhead may be lost. Soreness in the neck muscles may result from trying to compensate for rotator cuff weakness.
