Tears of the meniscus are one
of the most common injuries seen in the knee. The meniscus
has several functions, but one of the most fundamental is
that it functions to distribute the load in the knee.
It is wedge-shaped on cross-section and acts like a gasket
allowing the curved surface of the femur to conform with
the relatively flat surface of the tibia. In doing this,
the meniscus bears about one half of body weight when standing.
If the entire meniscus is removed, as was often done in
years past, the amount of load on the cartilage of the
tibia increases by 235%, and progressive arthritis results...

Degenerative meniscus tears (see episode 1) are almost always treated first without surgery.
Anti-inflammatory medication, injections, and physical therapy can all be helpful. If the pain does
not resolve with these measures arthroscopic partial menisectomy may be required. This procedure involves
trimming the torn portion of the meniscus, so that it no longer catches in the joint and generates pain

The term arthroscopy is derived from two Greek words. Arthro comes from the Greek word arthron which means joint .
Scope comes from the Greek word skopeo which means to view . In order to have a view into the joint , a small 1cm incision is made
