Tears of the meniscus are one of the most common injuries seen in the knee. The meniscus has several functions, but one of the most fundamental is that it functions to distribute the load in the knee. It is wedge-shaped on cross-section and acts like a gasket allowing the curved surface of the femur to conform with the relatively flat surface of the tibia. In doing this, the meniscus bears about one half of body weight when standing. Degenerative meniscus tears (see episode 1) are almost always treated first without surgery. Anti-inflammatory medication, injections, and physical therapy can all be helpful. If the pain does not resolve with these measures arthroscopic partial menisectomy may be required.
