Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a medical specialty dedicated to restoring optimal function to people with injuries. These physicians, called physiatrists (fizz ee a' trists or fizz eye'uh trists), can treat problems as common as a pinched nerve in the neck region or as serious as injuries from a diving accident.

"Bone Densitometer" DEXA Scanner

DEXA is an abbreviation for "Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry". This is a special x-ray procedure that determines the strength of your bones. Bone strength is assessed by measuring the bone density so a DEXA scanner is sometimes called a "bone densitometer." Other means of assessing bone strength are also available but a DEXA scan is currently the most accurate method and it uses the lowest amount of radiation (a standard chest x-ray exposes you to 10 times more radiation than a DEXA scan). The DEXA scanner at AOC is the most complete bone assessment tool ever devised.

Altaire Open MRI
AOC is very proud to have the latest in MRI technology. The Hitachi Altaire is the most sophisticated and strongest open magnet on the market. At first, it is common for many patients to have misgivings about undergoing an MRI procedure. You may be nervous about the feeling of confinement, or the length of the procedure, or whether any discomfort is involved. But, with education, many patients discover that Hitachi Altaire Open MRI is spacious and quiet, providing superior images with minimum disturbance. Some have even been known to fall asleep during the exam.

Epidurals

Epidural injections are available. When your physician requests an epidural, our skilled staff is available to assist you in understanding the procedure as well as scheduling an appointment in a timely manner.

Outpatient Surgery
Alabama Orthopaedic Physicians can now perform outpatient surgery right in the building where you saw your AOC physician. The new Surgery Center, "The Orthopaedic Center at Springhill", is a new state of the art surgery center. You can have your outpatient procedure in the morning and be home by the afternoon. If you are going to have surgery ask you physician if it would be appropriate to have your surgery in an outpatient setting.
