Job title: Surgical Technologist
Reports to: Director of Nursing

Summary

The surgical technologist participates in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse.  The technician will perform a variety of duties to prepare and maintain the OR suite for the patient.

Essential functions

Primary Nurse activities 95 percent of time

  1. Prepare for next day’s cases by gathering supplies, instruments and equipment.
  2. Wipe flat surfaces in OR the morning of surgery.
  3. Perform required autoclave tests and check for proper temperature and pressure.  Keep daily logs of autoclave performance. 
  4. Prepare OR with supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
  5. Assist with transport of the patient to the operating room.
  6. Assist with positioning of patient for the procedure.
  7. Monitor for breaks in sterile technique.
  8. Assist with surgical prep per protocol.
  9. Perform sponge and needle counts as appropriate.
  10. Assist entire team throughout procedure to ensure desired outcome.
  11. Ensure universal precautions are maintained.
  12. Order supplies for workroom as needed.
  13. Update physician preference cards.

  • Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools.
  • Above average physical strength to handle 50-100 pounds, taking frequency into consideration.
  • Ability to assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers; assist patients in and out of wheel chairs; push wheel chairs.
  • Normal dexterity of hands and fingers.
  • Normal coordination, including eye-hand, hand-foot.
  • Above average endurance.

Knowledge requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED
  • Completion of recognized Surgical Technologist training program.
  • One year operating room scrub experience required.  
  • Experience in Orthopaedic and outpatient surgery preferred.
  • Must have strong team orientation.
