Essential functions
Primary Nurse activities 95 percent of time
- Prepare for next day’s cases by gathering supplies, instruments and equipment.
- Wipe flat surfaces in OR the morning of surgery.
- Perform required autoclave tests and check for proper temperature and pressure. Keep daily logs of autoclave performance.
- Prepare OR with supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
- Assist with transport of the patient to the operating room.
- Assist with positioning of patient for the procedure.
- Monitor for breaks in sterile technique.
- Assist with surgical prep per protocol.
- Perform sponge and needle counts as appropriate.
- Assist entire team throughout procedure to ensure desired outcome.
- Ensure universal precautions are maintained.
- Order supplies for workroom as needed.
- Update physician preference cards.
Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Director of Nursing

- Ability to assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers; assist patients in and out of wheel chairs; push wheel chairs.
- Normal dexterity of hands and fingers.
- Normal coordination, including eye-hand, hand-foot.
- Above average endurance.
Knowledge requirements
- High School Graduate or GED
- Completion of recognized Surgical Technologist training program.
- One year operating room scrub experience required.
- Experience in Orthopaedic and outpatient surgery preferred.
- Must have strong team orientation.
